Dear Partners in Education—

Dr. Barbara Wilson, who has been our Superintendent for the past 3 years, has resigned, effective August 6, 2002. She will be serving as the Superintendent of the Jefferson Elementary School District, where she will be responsible for the education of approximately 7,000 students. Dr. Wilson leaves behind many accomplishments upon which our district can continue to build. She also leaves behind many children, friends, and admirers whose lives have been touched by her service.

Let us assure you that the Board of Trustees is united in the task of selecting a new superintendent. We will be asking for your best thinking about possible new approaches to the superintendency. Should we hire another superintendent or should we seek a new approach, such as sharing a superintendent with another district? We will provide opportunities for you to give us your input.

Meanwhile, to ensure that the district continues to run smoothly and keeps focused on our main priority—the education of our students, we have requested Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools, to provide us with the services of an Interim Superintendent. We are pleased to announce that James B. Orrell will serve as our Interim Superintendent.

We are fortunate to have a person of such high caliber and 35 years of varied experience as Mr. Orrell to provide leadership in this interim period. He comes to us having served as a teacher, principal, Director of Employer/Employee Relations, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, and Assistant to the Marin County Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Orrell has previously been an Interim Superintendent — most recently in the Ross Valley School District from August, 2001, through March, 2002.

Thank you, in advance, for your support of our Interim Superintendent and your willingness to help in the process of selecting our next educational leader. We must all continue to work together in the interest of our children.
